The reason you have opted for an online course is that you cannot afford a classroom course; you have decided to knuckle down and work hard at your office and for getting your degree. In such a situation, you owe it to yourself to make the right choice so that your efforts bear fruit in the right direction.

Factors which influence the choice of degree include your present educational qualifications, your line of work, and your career objectives. Online colleges offer degrees in various subjects. The levels include bachelors, associates, and master

Before you decide on joining an online course, you need to do a reality check on whether you will be able to handle the pace of an online course. Given that we have grown up learning in a traditional learning environment, a sudden change in pace of learning can throw our schedule out of gear.

In a traditional classroom setting, your study timeframe which covers theory lessons, practical, tests, term submissions, etc is decided by the school. With an online learning system, there is a lot more flexibility but this places additional responsibility on the individual. Time management gains importance when we talk of online learning, you can download a lesson when its available but the responsibility of completing it and moving on to the next lesson lies solely with you.

Sign up for only those classes that you feel confident of clearing in a given time frame; be particularly careful about the number of subjects you select if you also have a job to take care of. Keep aside some time every day for studies and finishing a few pages of material. Get into the habit of studying every day without external supervision.

Build a steady pace instead of rushing through the study material. Selecting an online school is an investment of time and money and as with every investment you want the best returns on your dollar. There are several things that you need to consider when screening online schools; do not hesitate to ask for additional information from the school authorities. The prime criterion for selection should be that the college should be accredited by one of the six state accreditation agencies or the National Educational Association.

Accreditation implies that the college fulfills the expectations of employers with regard to the quality of students produced as well as meeting prevalent education standards. Check how easy it is to network within the learning environment, the responsiveness of the professors and other faculty; contact ex-students to get an idea of how easy it is to communicate.

Often, you can learn a lot by talking on the phone or face-to-face with admission counselors. Before you talk to the admission counselor, prepare your questions so that you can gain maximum information. Your questions will help you gain insight into the learning process and you can compare inputs obtained from ex-students with those from college faculty. Each degree program has its own prerequisites regarding educational qualifications and work experience. An associate

According to Eduventures, which conducts research in education marketing, by the end of 2006 there will be close to 1.5 million students taking part in online higher education programs. Given that online learning has rapidly grown into such big business, it is important that if you are desirous of obtaining information about the subject, you visit the right online resources. Websites and blogs that publish fresh and unbiased reviews are any day a better alternative to marketing sites posing as content sites.

These sites are very often managed by colleges that purportedly offer high quality online education. If you cannot get in touch with someone who has an online degree to his name, there are a few genuine resources on the internet. These include www.geteducated.com and www.oedb.net

Accreditation is a way to ensure the reputability of the online university/program that you choose. The key, of course, is the unimpeachability of the accreditation organization. A university has to meet or exceed a set of standards that are deemed necessary by the accreditation body before they grant their seal of approval. A brief idea of how accreditation works will be of help to those who choose to pursue higher education online.

If a university seeks to avail federal student financial aid, it has to acquire national accreditation. Regional accreditation means that the university is recognized throughout the U.S. There are six regional accreditation bodies in the country, they are given below. An online degree from an institution accredited by any of these institutions is accorded the same validity as an onsite degree.

Another form of accreditation that exists is specialized accreditation, in this it is the course that is accredited so that employers have an assurance that students who have undergone the course have the basic minimum skills required to perform in a real-life scenario. Any specialized course should have the approval of the industry, so whether it is aeronautics or hotel management, check that your course has received a nod from the industry.

Online courses revolve around

One reason why online college degrees are proving to be so popular is that they are well received in the professional world. If you are planning on an online degree, you would do well to first evaluate courses so that you select the best one for yourself. Of course, the prime considerations are the course content, campus support, and whether taking up that course allows you to make the best of both worlds
